i usually have it on my shoulder and the bag is directly behind me. don't know if that makes sense though

as far as looks go it looks best on the same shoulder that it's resting on, though I'm sure it's more secure and comfortable on the other side

It looks better just hanging off the shoulder but as someone who lugs around a big bag on one shoulder. Put it over your head onto the other shoulder

45 degrees behind the leg you plant with! its super comfy for oversized bags, you can shrink the strap to have one side high which is nice 2

I have a messenger bag, and the only advise I can give is wear where it doesn't hurt as much and you'll get used to the weight
