“Beamer Boy” was released on this day nine years ago. It was one of six songs that Gus and his new friend, Nedarb, created and shared over several weeks in the winter of 2015-16. The track became the fourth on their extended play, CALIFORNIA GIRLS. Like the other songs on the project, “Beamer Boy” was made entirely via email: Nedarb sent Gus the beats, and Gus recorded and mixed his vocals before sending them back. At the time, Gus was living at home in Long Beach, NY, and had yet to meet Nedarb in person. Having released his second solo mixtape, LIVE FOREVER, in early December 2015, Gus was feeling confident in his music and working tirelessly. He spent his nights writing lyrics and recording vocals, and his days creating videos to accompany his songs. Gus created “Beamer Boy” on January 21, 2016. He was on a creative roll, using music as an emotional outlet. Two days earlier, on January 19, he had asked Nedarb for beats, which he used to make both “Beamer Boy” and “pray i die.” By then, he had already released “lil kennedy” and “let me bleed” and was starting to shape his vision for CALIFORNIA GIRLS. On January 7, he discussed his creative direction with Nedarb and had fun designing the project’s artwork using a photo he took of a rose from a bouquet at home paired with a random picture he found online. By the time he made “Beamer Boy” two weeks later, he had a clear idea of how the project should look and sound. That same day, Gus told Nedarb: “U bring out the best of me.” The beat Gus chose for “Beamer Boy” sampled The Microphones’ “Headless Horseman.” He wrote the lyrics in the Notes app on his phone, recorded the vocals in his bedroom, and mixed them himself. “I write like a catchy ass hook, then I loop it,” he told Nedarb, “but u switch up the beat so much that it sounds so different and amazing.” Hours later, Gus uploaded the song to SoundCloud, thrilled by the process of sharing his work directly with fans. That week, he filmed a music video for “Beamer Boy” with Emma and their friend Skylar while hanging out in Long Beach. Emma shot the video in their living room and backyard, capturing Gus and Skylar in quirky outfits — Gus even wore his mom’s fingerless gloves and a pair of ski goggles he found. Once again, he made the most of what he had and had fun doing it. “Beamer Boy” became one of Gus’s most beloved songs, a staple of his live performances. He debuted it at his first live show with Schemaposse in Tucson on February 13, 2016, and continued to perform it throughout his tours in 2016 and 2017. The song never left his setlist, even at his final show. The energy it brought to his performances and the love it received from fans never faded. Gus would be both thrilled and touched to know that “Beamer Boy” remains just as special to his fans today as it was when he first released it.
