Right now, my hometown Kamakura is being damaged by the actions of a small number of visitors who do not respect our culture. This is not a small issue — if it continues, it may cause Japanese people to develop negative feelings toward foreigners. Of course, I know not everyone is like this. In fact, I believe most people are different. But even so, the actions of just a few can create great problems for the whole community. ⸻ Kamakura Kōkō-mae Station became popular among many Asian visitors because of the opening scene from the anime Slam Dunk. But this area is not a tourist attraction — it is a quiet residential neighborhood. There are no public restrooms, no shops. Still, more than 2,000 people visit every single day. Some leave trash behind, and some even use private gardens in ways that deeply trouble the residents. Others trespass into graveyards or enter sacred temples just to take photos. ⸻ In reality, local residents clean the area every morning. They rarely complain out loud. But please, try to imagine this: If this were happening in your own town, how would you feel? ⸻ I believe that most of you watching this video are not behaving in such ways. As someone who also loves photography, I simply want to ask for a little more awareness when you take photos. As fellow photographers, it breaks my heart if “taking pictures” itself is seen as a nuisance. Please, respect Kamakura and respect Japanese culture. If you do, we will truly be able to welcome you from the bottom of our hearts.
