Black History Month - Day 3 ✨ Everyone knows the song "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. What many people don't know is that it was originally written and recorded by Otis Redding in 1965 and it was a commentary on the theme of human dignity. In 1967, Aretha covered and rearranged the song: the final result was not only musically different, it also flipped the original meaning as the song, sung by a female voice, sounded more like a protest against traditional gender roles. In fact, after becoming a hit, it also became a feminist anthem for the second-wave feminism movement of the 1970s. It earned Aretha Franklin two Grammy Awards and a never-ending list of achievements. Cash Box Magazine called the single a "frantic, driving, wailing, up-beat workout". This 1967 performance is definitely a testament to the vocal ability that it takes to sing "Respect": the projection, the posture, the enunciation, the phrasing, the emotion. It's pure perfection. Aretha's talent is unmatched to this day. #arethafranklin #60s #1960s #60smusic #1967 #60stv #vintagemusic #girlpower #iconicwomen #blackhistorymonth #BlackHistory #happyblackhistorymonth #BlackMusic #singer #vocal #vocals #respect - @retrosspection
