I don’t usually post personal things like this, but I’m exhausted, scared, and I need some advice. Last Friday, my husband had what was supposed to be a routine hernia surgery. He was discharged that same afternoon, despite my concerns that his blood pressure was much lower than normal for him. Less than two hours after we got home, he collapsed in our living room. He turned blue and stopped breathing. I called 911, and he was rushed back to the hospital. There, they discovered he was bleeding internally. He had lost approximately 10% of his blood into his abdomen and required emergency surgery that same night. The irony wasn’t lost on me that before he even made it into surgery, someone stopped by to collect his copay. He spent the next couple of days in the hospital, received a blood transfusion, and was eventually discharged. Two hours after getting home, he developed severe leg pain and a fever. Back to the ER we went. This time the co-pay collector recognized him and said she was gonna put in a request to have it waived. (Gee thank you) This time they found blood clots. He was admitted again, started on blood thinners, and after several more days, discharged today. We had just enough time to sit down for our first family meal in almost a week when the nurse called to check on him. I mentioned that he felt a little warm. She asked me to take his temperature while she was on the phone. Another fever. So here we are… back in the ER. More blood work. More cultures. More CT scans. More ultrasounds. More waiting. I’ve tried to stay quiet through all of this because my focus has been taking care of my husband, our children, and keeping our lives together. But at this point, I feel like we’re stuck in a revolving door, and I don’t know who we’re supposed to be talking to. Who do you ask for when something like this keeps happening? A patient advocate? A case manager? Someone in hospital administration? I genuinely don’t know what our next step should be. My husband isn’t a chart, a room number, or another patient moving through the system. He’s a father. He’s my husband. Our kids need him. I need him. Right now, it feels like someone put a livestock tag on him and we’re just watching him go in and out of the hospital over and over again. If you’ve been through something similar or know who we should be asking for, I’d truly appreciate your guidance. We’re hoping this trip is finally the one that gets us the answers he deserves.
