🧠 “We need to regulate artificial intelligence,” said 🇫🇷 French President Emmanuel Macron in his address to the annual meeting in Paris of French ambassadors around the world. “And regulation can only be approached with an global perspective.” Macron said regulation must start right from and be targeted to the design of the tools and algorithms behind artificial intelligence and generative AI, “regulating ‘by design’ as we say in French.” France’s leader told his Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna and the top leadership of the French diplomatic corps how “[T]hese past few years, we’ve placed France at the heart of real diplomatic innovation with the Tech For Good summit.” He continued: “We focused on a new approached based on partnerships, with non only governments around the table, but also civil society, companies, and all key stakeholders in the tech sector. This approach was the drive behind the Christchurch Call […] and our partnership with New Zealand, a format we need to leverage.” Macron wants to focus on more AI investments and a focus on Europe to be competitive with the US and China. He also said public-private partnerships and a multi-stakeholder approach are key. “This same format, the multi-stakeholder approach, needs to be pursued also for regulating artificial intelligence,” he said. “France is working on a common scheme with Germany, the G7 has discussed the topic at the Hiroshima Summit, and Europe has started to regulate.” The French President also warned: “We cannot regionalize regulations. It would be an error because, if the European Union goes too fast and too far with regulating AI, even if today France is not a driving force in AI, it would represent a great risk [for France]. We need to take the initiative.” Macron mentioned how “[T]he Brits have launched the first AI summit to take place in November, at which France will be certainly represented. Meanwhile, at the Paris Peace Forum we will also talk about regulation.” Indeed, one of the priorities at the upcoming Paris Peace Forum, to take place in mid November, will be “Ensuring a safer and ethical digital world.” #macron #digitaldiplomacy
