If the negative and positive posts of the batteries come in contact with something metal, heat begins to build — These can even explode. Original packaging is OK, but they can break, bend and warp over time, allowing the batteries to move freely. Having a battery organizer like the one featured here (Battery Daddy) will keep the batteries separate and upright with a hard plastic cover. Although battery fires are rare — they can still happen. Batteries can leak, swell, and overcharge (rechargeable) and short out. Always store your batteries in a dry, cool area away from small children.
