On November 17 2012, off the coast of Mexico, José Salvador Alvarenga (pictured) set off on a weekend fishing trip with his friend and fellow fisherman, 22-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba. Not long into their trip, a storm swept in. They decided to plough on through the poor weather. But things quickly turned sour, and the storm didn’t ease for a full week. Winds blew their small boat further and further away from the shore. The outboard engine broke down and their radios lost power, and much of their equipment had to be dumped overboard in order to make the boat more maneuverable. The pair survived on line-caught fish and sea turtles for 10 days, before 22-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba succumbed to the circumstances and sadly died. Alvarenga was now all alone. But miraculously, he survived. For another 12 months. After drifting for more than a year, Alvarenga finally washed up on a small remote island. It was in the Ebon Atoll - 9,500 kilometers from the coast of Mexico. After safely returning home, Alvarenga published a book on his experience - ‘438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea.’ But the family of his deceased fellow fishermate, Ezequiel Córdoba, wanted answers. A lawyer representing Córdoba’s family confirmed that they’re suing Alvarenga for profits from the book. However, the lawsuit also accuses Alvarenga of eating more than just fish and turtles. It accuses him of cannibalizing his own friend. Reportedly, medical professionals who examined Alvarenga after he washed ashore found no evidence to support the lawsuit’s claims. Alvarenga strongly denies the accusation, and says he and his friend made a pact to never resort to cannibalism. *Includes AI generated content #ocean #shipwreck #lostatsea #spooktok #scary #trend #sea #lost #castaway #survival #spooky #Mexico #deepsea #deepwater #slideshow #fyp #viral #foryou
