@mikejmacrone: Can I claim my boyfriend or girlfriend as a dependent on tax return? A boyfriend or girlfriend can be claimed as a dependent if they pass some of the same tests used to determine if your child or relative can be claimed as a dependent. First, your partner cannot be claimed as a dependent if they are eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another tax return. They can’t qualify as anyone else’s qualifying child. They can’t file a joint return unless they are only filing to get a refund of tax withheld. They must be one of these: U.S. citizen, U.S. resident, U.S. national or Resident of Canada or Mexico. They must have lived with you all 365 days of the year as a member of your household. They must have gross income (income that’s not exempt from tax) of less than $4,200. This includes the taxable part of these: Social Security, Pensions, Scholarships, Unemployment and all other taxable income You must have provided more than half of their support. This includes all money spent supporting the person, like: Food stamps, Housing assistance and other government assistance. #ValentinesDay #taxpreparation #taxtips #accountant #taxrefund #taxseason #taxaccountant #taxreturn #taxrefund2023 #taxrefund2022
