🍅 If you’re still peeling, seeding & straining tomatoes by hand… STOP! 😂 A hand-crank food mill is one of my favorite old-fashioned tools for preserving sauces! And if you have one sitting in the back of a cabinet, this is your sign to pull it out. 👇 A few of my favorite food mill tips: 🍅 Cook tomatoes first — soft tomatoes go through SO much easier. 🍅 Don’t overfill it — work in small batches so it doesn’t clog. 🍅 Run the scraps through twice — you can squeeze out a surprising amount of extra pulp! 🍅 Scrape underneath the screen — don’t let all that good sauce go to waste. 🍎 Skip peeling apples for applesauce! Cook them until soft and let the mill separate the skins and seeds for you. 🫐 Use it for berries too! It’s fantastic for making smooth raspberry or blackberry sauces without all those seeds. 🍅 Save those tomato scraps! Skins and leftover pulp can be dehydrated and turned into tomato powder. ❄️ Freezing sauce? Portion it into smaller containers so you can thaw exactly what you need. 🫙 Canning? Remember: a food mill only changes the texture. Always use a tested canning recipe and follow the required acidification and processing instructions. And PLEASE tell me I’m not the only one who thinks food mills are ridiculously satisfying to use. 😂 Do you have a hand-crank food mill?
