Ferritin is one of those things I wish more women understood. It’s not the same thing as iron, and low ferritin doesn’t always mean you’re already anemic. Ferritin reflects your body’s stored iron, and when those stores become depleted, you may start noticing symptoms that are easy to blame on stress, being busy, poor sleep, or simply getting older. Fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, hair shedding, feeling cold, headaches, heart palpitations and weakness can have many possible causes, but low ferritin can be one of them. And if you’re taking an iron supplement, how and when you take it matters. When possible, take iron on an empty stomach with water or vitamin C. Try to keep coffee, tea, dairy/calcium, and eggs away from the time you take your supplement because they can interfere with absorption. A 2-hour gap is a simple rule to follow.
