Deadwood is such an important habitat for a whole host of wildlife. Insects that feed on dead wood or on fungi that grows on dead wood have their own name ‘Saproxylic’ and in the UK there’s over 2000 species of them. Around 650 species of UK beetle rely on deadwood for a part of their lifecycle. So deadwood isn’t waste! It’s home and food for lots of biodiverse species. This was a fun little project. I got my logs from my Dad who made friends with his local tree surgeon to keep his wood burning stove well stocked. Don’t remove logs from nature as they may already be an important habitat. If you or someone you know is getting a tree cut down or trimmed see if you can get you hands on the logs. #homefornature #wildlife #logpile #wildlifegarden #wildlifeproject #saproxylic
