@gemsofscience: Christmas garnets are back with all new high quality cuts! Check the link in my bio or go to TurtlesHoard.etsy.com. This is chromium yag, an unusual lab-created garnet which is used in lasers. It has the bizarre combination of a tsavorite green base color and bright ruby-red fluorescence, resulting in a stone which can't decide what color it is. On white backgrounds they can look almost pure green, while on a black background the red can predominate. The color and angle of lighting has a big effect too! The camera always exaggerates the red at the expense of the green--they look better in person. Cr:YAG acts as a Q switch in lasers. It has the unusual property of being totally opaque until it reaches a critical point of saturation where it suddenly becomes transparent. This allows your laser crystal to fully charge and release all its energy in fast pulses rather than letting it leak out continuously. Fortunately for us the crystals sometimes crack during growth and we're able to get pieces that can be cut into gemstones. #garnet #gems #yag #chromium #colorchange #red #green #loosestone #gems #syntheticgems #luag #lumogarnet #loosegems #loosestones #faceted #loosegems #loosegemstones #january #birthstone #januarybirthstone #christmas #gemsofscience
