But Michel’s religious family saw another cause for their daughter’s ongoing psychiatric problems — demonic possession. Anneliese Michel was subjected to a total of 67 exorcism sessions between 1975 and 1976. Her parents also stopped consulting doctors, so none were aware of Michel’s worsening condtion. She eventually died, not of demonic influence, but of malnutrition and dehydration — and her parents and the priests who performed the exorcisms were found guilty of negligent homicide.
