@pedsdoctalk: 🚨 Your child's percentile is NOT a grade for your child or you. 🚨⁠ ⁠ You recently had a baby and going to the doctor 🥼 is a frequent occurrence. At the quarterly check-ups 📉 your child's height and weight is measured which leads them to fall into a certain percentile. Parents, I know you're familiar with how this goes. ⁠ ⁠ Being in pediatrics, 👩🏽‍⚕️ I often see the disappointment in parents’ eyes when they ask for their child’s percentile. ⁠ ⁠ ⚠️ “Only the 25th?”⁠ ⚠️ “The 95th? Do they need to lose weight?”⁠ ⚠️ “How do I get them to 100?”⁠ ⁠ As parents, you feel you're doing everything right, so how could this be?⁠ ⁠ Comparing your child’s percentile to another’s serves no purpose. We all are unique, and we all have different body frames. I still remember going to a holiday party before Ryaan was born and all the parents were comparing their children’s percentiles. I then imagined what it would be like if they all just started comparing their BMI with each other.
