As these signs traveled through Lebanon with Phoenician merchants, they remained a consonant-only system until reaching Greece. The Greeks introduced a major conceptual breakthrough by repurposing unused consonants into the world's first vowels, such as turning the "eye" symbol into the letter O and the "breath" symbol into E. The script eventually reached Italy, where the Romans and Etruscans made final adjustments to fit the Latin language.
