@rokrsdriveclub: Differentials are used in most cars and trucks. The reason for this is that they allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds. If you're driving straight down the road, all four of your wheels are turning at the same speed. But when you turn a corner, the inner wheels have to travel a shorter distance than the outer wheels. If your wheels were all attached to each other and turning at the same speed, the inner wheels would have to skid or slide around the turn. This would cause awful tire wear. A differential solves this problem by allowing the inner and outer wheels to rotate at different speeds. It does this by using a series of gears that are connected to each other in a way that allows them to rotate at different speeds. Don’t scroll yet, The three most common types of differentials you’ll hear about are Open Diff which is usually on a stock car This means the powered wheels can spin independently of each other. Limited Slip diff means the wheels can spin at different speeds, but limits how much. you’ll find these in sports and race cars. Welded diff This probably started as a limited or open differential, but some hoonigan wanted a drift car. This one is self explanatory, but essentially, you can weld a few of the gears inside of the differential that will essentially lock the powered wheels together.
