You call it cold. You call it miserable. The rain calls itself nothing. Look at the man kneeling in the downpour. The rain hits him exactly as hard as it hits everyone else. He isn't warmer. He isn't drier. The only thing that's different is what's happening behind his closed eyes — nothing. He has stopped arguing with the weather. And the moment he stopped, the rain lost its power to ruin anything, because it never had that power in the first place. You gave it to the rain. He took it back. This is Mushin — the empty mind. Not blank, not absent. Empty of the endless commentary that turns every raw event into a problem. The rain is just water falling.

While most people burn their whole day resisting things they can't change — the weather, the traffic, the thing that already happened — the empty mind spends nothing. No energy leaks into the commentary. He kneels in the storm completely unbothered not because he's suppressing the discomfort, but because he stopped manufacturing it. The discomfort was optional. Most of yours is too. So the next time the rain comes — and it will, in whatever form yours takes — try dropping the story before you drop the umbrella. Stop naming it good or bad. Let it be the thing it actually is. You'll find that most of what crushes you was never the event. It was the mind, refusing to let the event just be. Empty the mind, and the rain is just rain.
