@canadiancarpenter: I've been seeing a lot of people attempting this very old school trick but doing it all wrong. You're never gonna be accurate with it if you are trying to hook your tape at the front of the shoe plate. Most saws are V’d so no where to hook. Most saws are 1 1/2” from black to outside in the shoe. Take your measurement minus the 1 1/2 and butt your tape into the shoe toward the from of the saw as that is what leads the cut. I usually hook it on the plate and pull a little to keep it tight, i find it slips less

When I was an apprentice I seen a old guy do that. I said psh that’s easy. Ended up with 47 splinters and a crooked cut. I can do it now! 😂
