@arapawabluepearls: We have the best team worker, Fi, and she has one of the most unique operations with us at Arapawa Blue Pearls. Fi knows her pearls as I do! When Fi cuts out our pearls, she uses a diamond saw. Our quality control starts right from here. Any pearls that haven't been covered correctly are put aside. Nothing is wasted; they go with any excess shell to our shell buyer. The diamond saw machine is noisy and messy! Water goes in all directions, so Fi wears a lot of protective gear. From earmuffs and face mask to her wet weather gear and boots. (We even add a hot water heater in winter to make it easier on her hands) Attention to detail, as always, is vital. The pearls are cut out with as little excess shell as possible. It looks like an intimidating machine, but years of practice mean Fi can quickly cut out a bin of pearls. When something catches her eye, Fi shows me so we can note what's coming through on that particular harvest. We really enjoy this part of the pearl work.
