Some species do or are actually blind, but many species that have a higher chance of running into humans actually have very good eyesight and rely very heavily on it. This is why they have a protective membrane called the “nictitating membrane” that functions as an eyelid. Sharks will often blink like this when they come close to us or the boat, or even other sharks. They aren’t in “attack mode” as I often see people on social media describe, they are simply protecting their eyes the same way we would if we were getting close to bumping our head into something👀
