@thetomflyer: @rokaf.blackeagles stole the show at Avalon 2023 with a spectacular aerobatic performance with their eight T-50 jets!! ~ The Black Eagles are the flight display team of the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) based at Gangwon Province in South Korea. The team is more formally known as the 53rd Air Demonstration Group, and utilises KAI T-50 Golden Eagle jets, an advanced supersonic jet trainer and light combat aircraft. With assistance from Lockheed Martin, the South-Korean built jet was developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). Development for the type began in the late 1990s, with a maiden flight in 2002, before entering service with ROKAF in 2005. But the jet isn’t just popular with the South Korean Defences, who operate a total of 142 T-50’s. Iraq operates 24, The Philippines has 12, Thailand is in the middle of receiving 12, Indonesia has 16 with another 6 on order, Malaysia has ordered 18 and Poland has ordered 48 of the type. The original Black Eagles display team was formed in 1953, utilising P-51 Mustangs before transitioning through the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, North American F-86 Sabre, Northrop F-5 and Cessna A-37 Dragonfly until the Golden Eagle entered service in 2005.
