The law states that all planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun at one of the two foci. Before Kepler, it was widely believed that the planets moved in perfect circular orbits around the Sun. However, after years of careful observations and analysis of the data collected by his predecessor Tycho Brahe, Kepler discovered that the orbits of the planets were not perfect circles, but rather elliptical. An ellipse is a closed curve that is shaped like a stretched-out circle, with two focal points located within the shape of the ellipse.
