After nearly 14 years of being a parent, and 7 years in recovery, I’ve learned a lot about myself… and about what it really means to raise a son into a good man. Ironically, a lot of it meant becoming nothing like the man I used to be. For years, I found myself frustrated with my son’s behaviour. Constant conflict. Constant correction. Constant trying to change him. Until one day I realised something painful: Most of what frustrated me… was actually a reflection of me. The way I spoke. The way I reacted. The energy I brought into the home. The things I was unconsciously teaching him through my own behaviour. And eventually I surrendered to a simple truth: I cannot tell him how to be a better man. I have to show him. I can’t tell him not to make my mistakes while continuing to make them myself. I have to become the man I hope he becomes. And since making that shift, our relationship has blossomed into something so beautiful I genuinely struggle to put it into words. Watching him learn to communicate his feelings… understand himself… reflect… be emotionally aware… has inspired me more than anything else in my life. And it all started when I stopped focusing on what he needed to change… …and started looking at myself instead. #parenting #recovery #sober
