Edmond Albius was an enslaved horticulturalist from the island of Réunion who, at age 12, discovered the technique for hand-pollinating vanilla orchids. His method enabled the mass cultivation of vanilla outside its native Mexico, launching a global industry that still uses his technique today. Born into slavery around 1829 on what was then known as the island of Bourbon, Albius was orphaned at birth. He worked on the plantation of Ferréol Bellier-Beaumont, who taught him botany and horticulture. The challenge of vanilla: Though vanilla orchids had been transplanted to Réunion, they would not produce vanilla pods because their natural Mexican pollinator, the Melipona bee, was not present. In 1841, Albius demonstrated his hand-pollination method to his owner. He used a thin stick or blade of grass to lift the flap that separates the male and female parts of the flower, and then, using his thumb, pressed them together to pollinate the flower. Albius's technique was simple, fast, and highly effective. He traveled to other plantations to teach the method, and Réunion quickly became a major vanilla producer. Despite his monumental contribution, Albius never received financial compensation and died in poverty. Freedom: Albius gained his freedom in 1848 when slavery was abolished in the French colonies. Attempts to discredit him: A French botanist tried to claim the invention as his own, but his former owner, Bellier-Beaumont, defended Albius and ensured he received credit. Though recognized by some, he never received royalties or any significant financial reward for his discovery. An obituary following his death in 1880 described his end as

Though recognized by some, he never received royalties or any significant financial reward for his discovery. An obituary following his death in 1880 described his end as "destitute and miserable". Albius's legacy is found in the modern vanilla industry. Nearly all vanilla grown commercially today is pollinated by hand, using the precise technique developed by Albius. While his accomplishments were largely overlooked during his lifetime, he has received posthumous recognition. A statue now stands in his honor in Sainte-Suzanne, Réunion, and a street and school have been named after him. In Réunion, his technique is often called le geste d'Edmond, "the gesture of Edmond," in his honor. #fypシ゚viral #fyppp #blackhistoryfacts #BlackHistory #fyp
