👦“Mama, come play!” 👩 “I’ll follow you!” I’m that parent. You’ll see me swinging on monkey bars, and climbing the play structure to the tippy top when they shout “let’s go!” I’ll be out on the gymnastics floor when they feel hesitant at class and ask me to be by their side, or joining at bike club until they ask me not to. ✨ For many years as a new mom, I was sensitive to what others thought observing me do these things. I found myself wanting to explain my intentions and parenting approach, and feeling relief when I connected with parents who shared my belief that engaged parenting or parenting rooted in secure attachment, is not helicopter parenting. These days, I don’t think much of what others think of it, I focus on what I see in my children- that they thrive in our connection, and their secure attachment with us is cultivating an emotional health that leads to confidence and independence. I’m sharing this today because 7 years ago when I was a new mama and I felt this in my soul, I needed to hear someone else say it too. How each of us connects with our kids is different. Engagement is shaped by each personality and the needs of each individual. Theirs and ours. So I’m not saying you need to go play on a playground to connect with your kid. I’m here to say, you know your kids best. You know yourself best. You do you and trust it no matter what seems “conventional” around you. And if you love being out on that playground with them, do it! #engagedparenting #attachmentparenting #attachmenttheory #parenting #connection #motherandson
