Israeli activist Rotem Levin shares his Israelism story: ‘Until the age of, I can say 23, I've never met Palestinians. All the system is completely separated, segregated. So in my school, inside Israel, only Jewish students in my village, only Jews, and it was like a Jewish bubble. And the intention is to prepare the students to the army ‘2 years after I finished the Army service, I had, I dunno, fortunate enough to travel to Germany to participate in a dialogue project with Palestinians from the West Bank. ‘My bubble exploded as if I started to hear their narrative for the first time in my life: the Nakba, ethnic cleansing the massacres, everything. And I'm shocked, how come I have never heard about it before? I'm 23 years old, I live just next to them. I can take my car in half an hour, I cross the checkpoint, I will visit this refugee camp in Jenin, in Nablus, all these places, they're so close to my home. ‘And I start to understand that actually the way this place was established from the beginning was dependent on their ethnic cleansing. I started to see how they see us and how they feel from their eyes. ‘We traveled to Germany and the 16th of October and we just realized there is a need and people kept inviting us to speak and to share our stories. And it just unfolded this way. And we found ourselves traveling the early year around Germany and the United States giving these talks. We had over I think 150 events where we share our transformation and speak about the reality on the ground and what is needed. And because people in the west, they don't understand what's happening here ‘When people don't feel safe, and when there is so much dehumanization from the top, then things that weren't justified before starting to be justified.’ We are grateful to Rotem and so many other Israeli and American Jews who are steadfastly fighting for Palestinian freedom, and for the rights and equality of all people between the river and the sea.
