@deplorableway: Even the rats wouldn’t want to be this man’s friend 😭😭 (The history for this is kind of disgusting so I’ll have this as a forewarning— trench rats, also referred to as corpse-rats, were rats which were found in plentiful numbers in the trenches of WWI. Contributing to the already horrifically unhygienic and diseased conditions of the trenches, they caused severe physical and psychological issues to the soldiers. They carried many diseases such as leptospirosis, typhus, and bartonellosis, and since ammunition was to be reserved for the enemy, they were advised against being shot (though soldiers would make games out of catching them to avoid boredom). They were bloated and large, sometimes reaching the size of cats, and ate the corpses of dead troops, first the eyes before burrowing into the bodies to eat the flesh. Solutions to lessening the numbers of rats varied, such as rat tails being collected for payment by the French army (however soldiers would simply cut off the rats’ tails and let them free regardless) and killing the rats with bayonets. Since the rats ate human, eating the rats themselves to survive starvation was complicated in the sense of morality, because one would wonder if it could be considered cannibalism (and eating the rats was revolting nonetheless). The trench rats kept soldiers awake and were recalled to be among some of their worst experiences in the trenches, alongside things such as trench foot, the lice, and the muddy/wet conditions (especially in the spring).
