In 2026, it reaches its peak during the night of August 12 and the early morning of August 13. This year is especially favorable because the peak occurs close to the New Moon, meaning there is very little natural moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors. Under good, dark-sky conditions, observers may see as many as 50 to 100 meteors per hour at the strongest part of the shower, although the actual number seen from a particular location can be much lower because of city lights, clouds, haze, trees, buildings, and the observer’s view of the sky. NASA identifies the Perseids as one of the best annual meteor showers and says the shower can produce bright meteors and occasional fireballs. A meteor is the bright streak of light produced when a small piece of space debris enters Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed. The Perseids come from dust and tiny particles left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As Earth travels around the Sun, it crosses the stream of debris produced by this comet. The particles collide with molecules in our atmosphere and heat the surrounding air, creating the glowing streak that we call a meteor. Most of these particles are extremely small, often around the size of grains of sand or small pieces of rock, and they burn up high in the atmosphere rather than reaching the ground. If a piece survives its passage through the atmosphere and reaches the surface, it is called a meteorite. The Perseids get their name from the constellation Perseus. From Earth, the meteors appear to travel outward from a region of the sky called the radiant, located near Perseus. However, the meteors are not actually coming from the constellation itself. They are moving through space along the comet’s debris stream, and perspective makes their paths appear to meet near the radiant. You do not have to stare directly at Perseus to see meteors. A meteor can appear almost anywhere across the sky, so looking at a wide area of open sky is usually better than focusing on one small point. For the 2026 peak, the best general observing period is from around midnight toward dawn, when the radiant is higher in the sky and more of Earth’s nighttime side is facing into the debris stream. NASA recommends finding a dark, open location away from strong artificial lights. City light pollution can make faint meteors almost impossible to see, but the brightest Perseids may still be visible from urban areas. Give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adapt to darkness, avoid looking at bright phone screens, and allow yourself time to watch patiently. No telescope or binoculars are necessary. In fact, using the naked eye gives you a much wider field of view, increasing your chance of catching a sudden streak. The Perseids are also famous for fireballs. A fireball is an especially bright meteor produced by a larger particle entering the atmosphere. These events can become much brighter than ordinary meteors and may leave a glowing trail that remains visible for a short time. Seeing one is not guaranteed, but it is one reason the Perseids are so exciting for skywatchers. The 2026 event is part of a long annual cycle. The Perseids are active for weeks, but the peak is when the Earth passes through the densest part of the comet’s debris stream. The shower has been observed for more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest recorded meteor showers. Comet Swift-Tuttle itself follows a long orbit around the Sun and takes roughly 133 years to complete one revolution. Its debris continues to spread along its orbital path, allowing Earth to encounter the particles every year. For observers in the Northern Hemisphere, the Perseids are particularly convenient because they occur during warm summer nights
