This one was a very lucky find--while ruby, pink sapphire and colorless sapphire are relatively well known in industry it's much rarer for other colors to be used. It turns out that blue sapphire is sometimes used for high end filters in applications with a ton of heat, in particular for use in front of a xenon flashbulb that's used for skincare treatments. The blue sapphire apparently allows only the right therapeutic wavelengths to pass through.
