It may depend on the variety. In my 30+ years of experience I have never had an issue. Clip off the scape and it keeps growing.

Tie a bag over the seed head, as long as it isn't an F1 hybrid, you got free seeds for next year.

If you want to keep your plants until year 2 to get seeds, then how can you harvest the onions during year 1?

I dry my vegetables for soup mixes. I found that onion seeds add flavour to soup mix and if not used in two years I can replant the onion seeds.

I planted green onions from the kitchen a few yrs ago, just to see…it blooms every yr & it’s 2” around now 😅 it’s just a perm part of the garden now.
