I woke up this morning to a text from Megan. “Call me as soon as you wake up.” And somehow, before I even called her, I knew it wasn’t going to be good news. I video called her, and the minute I saw her red, swollen eyes, I knew something was terribly wrong. She told me that a young woman we have known and loved her entire life had died. Our families have been connected for almost 30 years. Her mom babysat my three girls when she was a teenager. Years later, Megan babysat her. And when she became a teenager, she babysat Amy. She even lived with Megan, Kevin and Amy for a while within the last couple of years, so Amy didn’t just know who she was. She knew her well. She loved her. And it was always just kind of understood that someday, when this young woman had children of her own, Amy would probably be their babysitter. That’s how life was supposed to go. But last night, just moments before her 25th birthday, she was in a car accident and didn’t make it. Today I had to console my daughter as she grieved someone who had been part of her life for almost 25 years. And then I had to be there when Amy was told. There are some moments as a grandma that you would give anything to protect your grandchildren from. Watching an almost 10-year-old little girl learn that someone she loved is no longer here is one of them. You try to find the right words. You explain that the person we love now lives in our memories and in our hearts. You hold them while they cry. You answer the questions you can answer. And you wish with everything in you that you could make it hurt less. But you can’t. Tonight my heart hurts for a family that lost their daughter far too soon. It hurts for Megan. And it hurts for Amy. And I keep thinking about those generations of babysitters. Her mom cared for my girls. Megan cared for her. She cared for Amy. Almost 30 years of our families being woven into each other’s lives. Sometimes we talk about how quickly life can change. Today, I felt it. Hold your people close.
