The Tori no Ichi markets at Shinto shrines are held on “days of the rooster” in November each year for people to go to wish for happiness, good fortune, and success in business. The markets are famous for the brightly decorated bamboo rakes called kumade that you buy to “rake in good fortune.” Of course, big businesses buy the big ones and you hope to buy a bigger rake each year. Even if you don’t get a rake, you can still participate in the huge matsuri surrounding the shrine, with dozens of food booths selling yakisoba, okonomiyaki, grilled corn, grilled squid, takoyaki, karaage and more. (Yakisoba was legit!! Sorry no photo.) @debaoki went in the morning and it was mellow. I went at night and it was CRAY-JEEEEEE!!! It’s like Bon Dance x Punahou Carnival x Night Market. On steroids.
