Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a resolution Thursday to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his handling of the U.S.–Mexico border. “Rather than adhering to an oath he took to defend and secure our country and uphold the Constitution when he was sworn in as secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas has engaged in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with the laws of the United States,” she said on the House floor. The text of the resolution accuses him of “willful admittance of border crossers, terrorists, human traffickers, drugs, and other contraband” and says he “has failed to maintain operational control of the border.” The resolution is “privileged,” meaning the House now has two legislative days to act on it. A motion to table the resolution could be offered first before an actual vote on the measure. Lawmakers could also vote to refer the resolution to a committee, which is what happened in May when Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) offered an impeachment resolution against President Biden. The Georgia firebrand previously tried to impeach Secretary Mayorkas in May, but House leaders never brought it up for a vote. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not yet weighed in on this new resolution but has indicated that he’s open to impeaching Secretary Mayorkas, who has been a top Republican target for years. “Look, Mayorkas has been an abject failure in his position,” the new speaker recently told Fox News. “I believe he has committed impeachable offenses, and I have been on a record saying that for a long, long time.” #mayorkas #alejandromayorkas #marjorietaylorgreene #mtg #impeach #impeachment #houseofrepresentatives #cspan
