Would you rather splurge on your wedding💍 or your honeymoon🌴? Last week someone asked me how much I'd spend on an engagement ring, which promptly sent me down a wedding expenses rabbit hole. Here's what I found: 🥂 The average wedding costs $30k 💍 The average engagement ring costs $5.8k 🌴 The average honeymoon costs $5.1k 💔 ...and there is a correlation between expensive weddings & divorce 👀 A 2014 study found that the more couples spent on their engagement and wedding, the higher the likelihood they eventually divorced. This study also found that having a honeymoon was associated with a LOWER risk of divorce (regardless of the cost of the honeymoon). So does that mean you're doomed to fail if you spend a lot on your wedding? Not necessarily, because a) correlation doesn't equal causation & b) there may be another factor at play here: 💰 45% of newlyweds go into debt to pay for their wedding, &

Not necessarily, because a) correlation doesn't equal causation & b) there may be another factor at play here: 💰 45% of newlyweds go into debt to pay for their wedding, & "financial issues" is repeatedly cited as a leading cause of divorce. It could be that expensive weddings are correlated with divorce because expensive weddings cause financial stress in relationships. 👇 Despite societal, familial, and cultural expectations around wedding festivities, I want a cheap(er) wedding & would rather spend extra on my honeymoon. I know that I would get more value from a month-long vacation than I would from a day-long party. I also feel that taking that same money & buying shared assets with it, saving for children, or investing in shared experiences and/or relationship therapy would be a more sincere show of commitment than a fancy wedding in my relationship. Let me know what you think! 💭 How much would you (or did you) spend on your wedding? And would you rather splurge on your wedding💍 or honeymoon🌴? .... Disclaimer! In no way am I telling anyone what to do with their money or marriage. I completely understand that how much you spend on your wedding is a personal decision & many factors go into it beyond money. 🔗 All sources are linked in the corresponding blog post on my website! #goals #personalfinance #finance #womenwhoinvest #investing #invest #investingforbeginners #millenialmoney #travel #creditcards #points #richlife #save #womenandmoney
