In 2016, South Africa was facing one of its worst droughts in decades. Farmers were struggling to protect their crops, water was becoming scarce, and agricultural groups were seeking more than a billion dollars in government assistance. But while the country searched for solutions, a 16-year-old girl in Johannesburg was experimenting with something most people throw away. Orange peels! Her name was Kiara Nirghin, and her inspiration came from baby diapers. She noticed how they could absorb and hold large amounts of liquid and wondered whether a similar natural material could help soil retain moisture during dry weather. So she began experimenting with orange peels, avocado skins, and other natural ingredients. After processing and drying the materials, she developed a biodegradable mixture that could be added to soil to help it hold water longer. And the early results were promising. According to her experiments, the material could absorb up to 300 times its own weight in water, acting like tiny underground sponges that could help plants access moisture during dry periods. Her project, called "Fighting Drought with Fruit," won the grand prize at the 2016 Google Science Fair, earning her a $50,000 scholarship. Although her invention wasn't an immediate solution to South Africa's drought and needed further testing, it showed a promising way to conserve water using everyday waste. What makes Kiara's story remarkable is that while most people saw orange peels as garbage, she saw an opportunity to help solve a serious environmental problem. Sometimes, meaningful scientific ideas begin with something ordinary and someone curious enough to see its hidden potential.
