Disclaimer, this Tenmoku glaze recipe in this video will fire differently in an oxidised atmosphere, say in an electric kiln, meaning the results you see at the end of this reel are only achievable when fired in reduction in a gas kiln to cone ten, (1290ºC). Otherwise, this short video demonstrates how I mix up glazes, from weighing them out, dumping the raw powdery materials into a bucket of water and then how its sieved, ready for use. This particular recipe is: Cornish stone 85% Whiting 15% Red iron oxide 16% It fires to a glossy black when applied thickly, thinner, and it turns a watery-brown that’s contrasted by pooling bands of black glass that gather in the crevices, perhaps more interestingly though, when dipped on in a thinner layer, the crystals on the surface really begin to show. These are often metallic red flecks that are scattered across the surface, which in itself is lovely, although the brown, as seen on the curvaceous bowl at the end, is a little too intense for me. Lastly, as it’s important to mention, throughout this process I’m wearing a mask so I don’t breathe in the glaze dust and I also open all the doors and windows in my workshop to ventilate the space. If you can do this outside, even better, like I used to do during my apprenticeship at Maze Hill Pottery with Lisa Hammond. Back then she kept all her raw materials in a garage down the road, in there I’d be suited up in my apron and respirator, doling out powdery clouds of glaze into larger buckets. Who knew what people walking past made of the situation. #pottery #glaze #asmr #ceramics #craft
