Actually, it’s a totally normal, clean egg and the speckles (or streaks in this case) are a result of the hen’s unique biology. 🥚 Eggshells get their speckling from the deposition of pigments during the formation process in the hen's oviduct. Hens that lay eggs with speckled shells have a gene that allows them to deposit pigments on the eggshell, creating the unique and beautiful soeckled patterns. The pigments that create the speckling can vary in color, from brown to blue, and even green! But here's something interesting: sometimes the speckles on an eggshell can turn into streaks. This happens when an older hen (like mine) lays an egg. As hens age, their oviduct can stretch and become less flexible, leading to the egg moving more slowly through the process of formation. As a result, the pigments that were meant to form speckles can sometimes get stretched out into streaks. So, if you've ever cracked open an egg from an older hen and noticed that the speckles have turned into streaks, now you know why!
