Phyllis Hyman: The Voice That Stopped the Room July 6, 1949 – June 30, 1995 Phyllis Hyman grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, surrounded by gospel, blues, and soul. She was the eldest of seven kids in a hardworking family. Her mother worked at a nightclub, and young Phyllis soaked up every note. She moved to New York City to study music and never looked back. Her deep, rich voice was unlike anything the industry had ever heard. She worked alongside some of the biggest names in jazz and R&B. Drummer and producer Norman Connors discovered her at a Manhattan club in 1975. Together, they recorded You Are My Starship (1976), which went Gold and launched her career. She also sang on jazz giant McCoy Tyner's Looking Out (1982), proving her jazz credentials were the real deal. She shared stages and studios with Gregory Hines, Pharoah Sanders, and Jon Lucien, artists who recognized her rare gift immediately. Phyllis never stopped growing as an artist. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her Broadway role in Sophisticated Ladies in 1981. Her album Prime of My Life (1991) gave her a number-one R&B single — finally, the chart success she deserved. In 1992, UK fans voted her the world's best female vocalist, topping Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. She battled bipolar disorder and depression quietly, even while delivering her most powerful performances. On June 30, 1995, Phyllis passed away in New York City at just 45 years old. She was hours away from performing at the Apollo Theater that very night. Her posthumous album I Refuse to Be Lonely arrived just five months later, breaking hearts worldwide. She left behind no children but a catalog of recordings that still move people to tears. The jazz world lost a voice that was truly one of a kind. If Phyllis Hyman's music is new to you, start with You Are My Starship and Prime of My Life, then tell us your favorite track in the comments below! #PhyllisHyman #JazzVocalist #RnBLegend #BlackMusicHistory #SoulMusic
