Raygun Speaks Out:
Raygun Speaks Out: "Please Stop" (After Breakdancing Backlash) Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known by her stage name "Raygun," addressed the online criticism surrounding her performance at the first-ever Olympic breakdancing competition in Paris. In an Instagram video, Gunn expressed her surprise at the negativity she's received. "I just want to thank everyone who's supported me," Gunn began. "I really appreciate the positivity. I hoped to bring some joy, but didn't realize it would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating." The 36-year-old went on to emphasize the seriousness with which she approached the competition. "While I had fun, I worked my butt off preparing," she stated. "I'm honored to have been part of the Australian team and breaking's Olympic debut." Gunn also addressed the "misinformation" circulating online, including a petition questioning her selection process. "Please refer to the statements by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF)," she said. "Fun fact: there are no points in breaking. You can see how the judges scored me compared to my opponents on Olympics.com." Concluding her video, Gunn requested privacy for herself and the Australian breaking community. "Everyone has been through a lot," she said. "I'll be happy to answer questions on my return to Australia." Gunn's performance, which included some unconventional moves, sparked online mockery. However, the AOC has defended her selection and condemned the petition. "These falsehoods are bullying and harassment," stated Matt Carroll, the AOC CEO. Gunn's family has also voiced their support. Her father-in-law, Andrew Free, criticized the judging criteria on Facebook. "The judges were looking for a specific style," he wrote, "and Rachael's originality wasn't rewarded." Despite the criticism, Gunn remains proud of representing Australia and breakdancing in the Olympics. The gold medal went to Japan's Ami Yuasa, with silver and bronze awarded to Dominika Banevic (Lithuania) and Liu Qingyi (China) respectively.
