![Who is truly in control here? The man with the bread in his hand, or the bear that has learned to expect it? On the winding roads of Transfăgărășan and other mountain passes in Romania, a dangerous game plays out daily. Tourists, eager for a fleeting thrill, stop their cars, roll down their windows, and hand-feed wild bears as if they were oversized stray dogs. It’s a spectacle, a bizarre roadside attraction, but beneath the surface, it’s a tragic dance of dependency—one that rarely ends well for the bear. Bears are no fools. They learn fast. Like some twisted Pavlovian experiment, they now associate cars with food, tourists with easy meals. The result? Generations of bears that have lost their fear of humans, wandering onto highways, blocking traffic, even approaching people on foot. The authorities put up warning signs, conservationists plead for people to stop, yet the cycle continues. Some locals even fuel the problem, leaving food scraps on purpose, believing it’s a kindness. But what begins with a snack ends with a bullet when a bear gets too bold, too comfortable, too close. What does it say about us that we can’t resist taming the wild, even when it puts an entire species at risk? We call them beasts, yet it’s our own recklessness that leads them to their fate. The bear learns, the bear adapts, but it’s man who never seems to change. When will we realize that true respect means keeping our distance?
