A Black-owned startup is designing a privacy-first phone that's solar-assisted and built to be repaired, not replaced. The company is Cioré, pronounced "core," and it was founded by Chrissy Gilmore. It's building its own operating system, the software that runs a phone, and the company says it won't track you in the background or sell your data. The phone is being designed to be modular, so you could replace one worn-out part instead of the whole phone. It's also solar-assisted, and the team is exploring small battery top-ups from sunlight, indoor light, and warmth from daily use.
