If you wake up on Mother's Day with a knot in your stomach before they've even opened their eyes, this is for you. It isn't bad luck. It's a pattern, and it runs on a script. The day that's supposed to be yours becomes another show you never agreed to star in. Here are the five moves that repeat every single year. 1. They "forget." The flowers, the card, the plan. Then act completely stunned when you mention it, and somehow you're the one ruining the day by bringing it up at all. 2. They make it about their mother instead. You watch the effort pour toward a woman who never lifted a finger for you, while you stand there holding the kids you're raising mostly alone. 3. They give you the bare minimum and expect a parade for it. A gas-station bouquet, a card they didn't quite sign, a breakfast you ended up making yourself. Then: "see, nothing is ever enough for you." 4. They pick a fight before noon. Out of nowhere, over nothing. So the whole day gets hijacked into managing their mood instead of being about yours. 5. They go cold. Silent treatment. Phone face-down. By dinner you're the one crying in the bathroom, running the tape back, wondering what you did wrong on the one day meant to celebrate you. A difficult person struggles to show up for you. This kind can't afford to. Your good day threatens the story where they're the one who matters. This isn't them being "stressed," and it isn't a misunderstanding you can explain your way out of. It's the same five moves, every May. ... And every year you tell yourself next year will be different. It won't, not until you stop waiting for them to change and start believing the pattern the first time. Watch for it next spring. The script will run again, exactly on cue — and this time you'll see it coming.
