Luck was on our side. After hiking the Everglades from about sunrise to sunset, and not seeing a lot, we took a quick Hail Mary spin to look for pythons on our ride back north. The sun was just about to set when my friend @willschureck yelled PYTHON. I couldn’t see it from the passenger side because it was in the grass on the driver’s side. I was expecting an 8-foot male (because the mature larger females are typically on nests right now), so I was really pleased to see a large female instead. You can often visually spot a female by her girth, but I did sex her to confirm. The crazy thing is that, even though she was incredibly wide, she was also emaciated. So, I suspect she had just left a nest she had been sitting on for the past 60 days. I did not see any hatchlings in the area so she was probably on the move to finally get a meal. Could this be the official start of hatchlings season for the early breeders? It makes sense that Florida’s annual Python Challenge was moved up a month, to July this year instead of August. Burmese pythons must be removed because they are decimating native wildlife in the Florida Everglades, with potentially irreversible consequences to our ecosystem. Burmese pythons have nearly eradicated native mammals with an especially severe effect on raccoons, opossums, bobcats, marsh rabbits, cottontail rabbits, and foxes in certain parts of the Everglades. With pythons hiding in approximately 1.5 million acres of dense swamp and the females laying approximately 100 eggs a year, the challenge to remove Burmese pythons is now beyond comprehension. Removing invasives saves natives. Sadly, these pythons must be humanely euthanized. It’s the law. When removing pythons, I like to at least repurpose the skin as a tribute to these amazing apex predators. Please do not release exotic pets into the wild.
