Despite a decline in popularity in the early 1980s, they made a commercial comeback in the UK by the late 1980s. The Bee Gees have sold an estimated 120 million to 250 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists and the most successful trio in contemporary music history. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, noted for having been outsold only by Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Paul McCartney at the time. With nine number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, they are the third-most successful band in Billboard charts history, after the Beatles and the Supremes. Following Maurice's death in 2003, Barry and Robin initially retired but later reformed the group in 2009.
