I didn’t think it was even possible when I first heard the diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy. Rocky’s birth was beautiful. It was peaceful and calm. He came out healthy, crying just seconds after delivery. Wasn’t CP caused by a lack of oxygen at birth? That’s what I’d always believed. Sometimes it is. But I quickly found out there are other causes too. One of the most common is a stroke in utero. When the neurologist explained that, so much started making sense. The lopsided crawling, stiff arm, his hand in a fist, his tongue quiver. As heartbreaking as it was to hear, it also gave us a direction. We finally knew what we were dealing with and could start figuring out how to help him. A few weeks later, I was cleaning my office when I came across an old pamphlet tucked inside a book. The cover read “Hyperbarics and Stroke.” In that moment, I felt the Spirit so clearly say. “This is going to help him.” I knew it wasn’t a coincidence. It was an answer. I started digging into research. While every doctor I talked to told me there weren’t studies on CP and HBOT, they couldn’t deny the results with stroke patients. And I couldn’t deny the prompting I felt. They warned us it would be expensive, complicated, and not likely covered by insurance, but Josh didn’t even blink. “If you felt that prompting, then that’s all I need to know.” So we took the leap and got a chamber. There has definitely been a learning curve. But now, just weeks in, we’re watching something unfold we didn’t know would actually be possible. His hand is loosening. His movements are stronger. Even his physical & occupational therapists have seen progress that’s surprised them. He’s now walking, running, jumping and even learning to walk up and down stairs. He’s started using his left hand to play, sign, and eat. Things he never did before. I know there is still so much unknown. But this feels sacred. Like an act in faith and trust in God’s voice. Through Him, we’re not just helping Rocky adapt, we’re helping him heal.
