The pledge Allah refers to here is the Pledge of Ridwan, in which the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, pledged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that they would not flee from him. It was a special covenant that required them to stand firm and not retreat, even if only a few of them remained, and even in situations where retreat would normally be permitted. Allah says: “Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you are actually pledging allegiance to Allah.” The reality of the matter is that they were making a covenant with Allah Himself. The pledge was so strongly affirmed that Allah said: “The Hand of Allah is over their hands.” Meaning, it was as though they had pledged directly to Allah and shaken hands with Him through that pledge. This expression serves to emphasize the seriousness of the covenant, strengthen its significance, and encourage them to fulfill it faithfully. Therefore Allah says: “So whoever breaks his pledge only breaks it to his own loss.” Whoever fails to uphold what he promised Allah harms only himself, for the consequences and punishment of that breach return to him. And Allah says: “But whoever fulfills what he has covenanted with Allah, He will grant him a great reward.” Whoever fulfills this covenant completely and faithfully will receive a tremendous reward, the true greatness of which is known only to the One who bestows it.
