I would clean and treat it with Leather Honey before starting restoration. Nothing like scores from the goodwill bins

Thin coats nice sable or faux sable brush for smoothness. I would use tooth picks to keep the wholes open and degunked.

most leather will accept paint no worries use a cabinet foam roller the small one and just do light coats after cleaning
