Fungal mycoses from plant pathogens are not uncommon and this is far from the first infection of its kind. Unfortunately most journalists and media outlets tend to emphasize the hyperbolic nature of their headlines while doing minimal research into the field before publishing. This is an interesting case but probably not worth the international attention it is getting. Again, fungal diseases tend to move slowly, are not highly transmissible, and do not pose a threat for the majority of people with a healthy immune system. The increase in fungal mycoses is something we should be aware of, but there’s zero chance we have to worry about a “TLOU” style epidemic spreading quickly around the globe. .
