Drawing trees in colored pencil may seem difficult, but it’s not as hard as you think! Here’s some common mistakes I see people make when they draw trees, and how to fix them: 1. Trying to draw all the details in the leaves. While I commend the effort put into putting in all the details, sometimes less is more. Drawing squiggly, circular lines (also known as scumbling) is a great way imply the leaf texture. Implying the texture actually makes the drawing more realistic. 2. Not using enough colours in the leaves. While it’s true that most trees have leaves that are green, you’ll want to use different greens, yellows and even blues. Yellow and yellow-greens works well in the places where the sun is hitting the leaves directly. Dark blue and blue-green works well in the shadows. Make sure to pay attention to the value of the colors you use! 3. The leaves look like one big shape.
